Ubuntu Lucid Alpha 3 window button relocation procedure.

So you want to change the buttons from the left to the right of the window in Ubuntu Lucid Alpha 3? Well here's how to do it.

There's three main steps.

  1. Start gconf-editor
  2. Navigate to the apps->metacity->general section
  3. Edit the value of button_layout, changing the position of the colon from the right hand side to the left.

Step 1 – Launch gconf-editor

While holding the ALT key down press the F2 key. You should see the Run Application dialogue box pop up. Then type gconf-editor into the text field and click Run.

Type gconf-editor into the text field and click
the Run button.


After a moment you should see the gconf-editor program appear.

Step 2 – Navigate to the apps->metacity->general section.

In the left pane click the plus symbol to the left of apps and you should see the list of apps appear.

Scroll down the list to metacity and click the plus symbol to expand its list of settings. Click general and the list of settings should appear in the right hand pane.




Find the button_layout setting in the right hand pane, and right click it and click "Edit Key".

Select Edit Key


Now the Edit Key dialogue box should appear. There'll be a colon at the end of the text. Remove this and type a colon at the start of the text and click the OK button.

Remove the colon from the end of the line

and put a colon at the start, then click OK.


And hey, presto. You should have the buttons over on the right hand side of the window, just where you expect it to be. You can now close gconf-editor and move on to more fun things.
